CANADIAN WOMEN REACH SEMI-FINALS
Canada is back in the race to win a gold medal in the women’s football event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. They defeated their French opponents by a lone goal in a keenly contested match on Friday, August 12m 2016.
Canada reached the top three in the last Olympics hosted in London after defeating France 1-0 at the semi finals to pick up the bronze medal. This year again, the Canadian women repeated the same feat but on a lower rung by getting past them by the same margin to reach the semi finals. The higher-ranked French opposition hoped to pull a revenge at the quarterfinals, but it quite happen.
Canada has enjoyed a brilliant run at the tournament in Brazil, winning all four of its games so far. Three of those wins were against top five teams, a big feat for the country ranked 10th in the world. France is ranked No 3, and the victory over them means that Canada is the only team to make a return to the semi finals after playing in the last Olympics. Three-time Olympics champions United States were knocked out by Sweden in the quarterfinals, France knocked out by Canada, Japan that won the silver medal in the last campaign didn’t even qualify this time.
Canada lost to the United States in the last semi finals 4-3 in London, but would be hoping to get past Germany ranked second this time around. If you're loking for help on how to bet on Olympic games, I'd say back Canada all the way!
Germany are looking to cause an upset after losing to Canada 2-1 in the group stage. Germany earned their spot in the semi finals by getting past China 1-0.
The Canada team coach John Herdman said: “I’m proud of what we’re showing. We’re on the medal rounds. We’re here, but we’re not done yet.” If Canada get past Germany, they would play either of Sweden or Brazil for a chance to claim gold in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
