FANS BURN PITCH AFTER GAME
Fans of erstwhile popular football club Paniliakos FC burned a football pitch at the end of the fight with opposing side and long standing rivalKalamata FC.
The game ended 3-2 but after the keenly competed game, tempers flared.
The opposing fans had tried to watch their tempers all through the game but as it ended Kalamata fans approached the Pyrgiansbut the Police were on ground to keep things cool. The law enforcement officers were all around the surrounding streets and at the Messiniakos Stadium.
The police maintained order but when it was time for the fans to leave, the fans started hurling the seats at the police who in turn fired at them. The result was a full blown fire incident that required the help of fire fighting officers. The fire had spread to the pitch, causing considerable damage.
In the Greek Football Amateur Cup – one of the biggest competitions for amateur teams in the country – Kalamata were supposed to play Panelioukos. The game was delayed because of a funny episode. The referee Christos Verges and his assistant noticed that the money they were paid before the game commenced was missing, most likely stolen.
The referees claimed they had added their own money and kept it safely in the dressing room before it went missing. It is still not known if the money was later found.
In other news, the coach and fans of Paniliakos were later found to have escaped through ‘Gate 4’ during the chaos.
