Pedro Martins praises special year after winning Greece Super League title
Olympiakos were able to confirm their success in the Greek Super League after a 2-1 home victory over OFI. As a result of this win, Olympiakos have been able to open up a 22 point advantage. Even if PAOK’s seven point deficit is overturned, they would not be able to catch Olympiakos in the remaining matches. After confirmation of their league title success, manager Pedro Martins said that this was indeed a special year on a personal and professional level. As one of the most successful teams in the Greek region, Olympiakos were hoping to pick up the first league title since 2016-17.
The club have been going through a period of disappointment in recent years, but it has been quickly overturned with this title success. In the last few years, the club has been unable to claim success in a major competition. The last league cup success for the team came in 2014-15, while they have been unable to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League since the 2013-14 season. Before the recent Greek Super League success, however, Olympiakos were able to win the title on seven successive campaigns. In the last three seasons, Olympiakos have come third and second before winning the recent title.
“I’m very happy with this achievement. It was a special year. We built a tight-knit and high quality squad over two seasons in Greece and all the work developed was aimed at reaching these moments. At this time, my words are of thanks to the president and the club board for the conditions they have provided us since we arrived here and for the confidence that they have always shown us.Secondly, thanks to the supporters who more than anyone deserved this achievement. We know that all of them will be celebrating at this moment with those close to them and who share the love for this great club,” said Martins.
