OLYMPIAKOS FALL SHORT

The German club Schalke managed to complete a stunning Champions League away victory after claiming a 2-1 win over the Greek club Olympiakos in the group stages of the competition. Schalke were playing against their Greek opposition looking to get the victory that will put them as one of the favourites to qualify from group.

They got the necessary result after the goals from the likes of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Benedikt Howedes. Meanwhile, Djamel Abdoun was on the scoresheet for the Greek club, but it only turned out to be a mere consolation. There was a lot of excitement before the match, but it was not translated onto the pitch after that was little action in the first half.

However, Olympiacos made some attempt to score in the first half by breaking extremely quickly and by also taking advantage of the set pieces. The important moment in the match came in the latter stages of the first half when Benedikt Howedes scored from his header with only a few minutes of the first half remaining. This proved to be the crucial advantage and breakthrough in the match because Schalke were extremely different in the second half playing on the counter-attack. They managed to extend their lead through a goal from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar before Djamel Abdoun scored the consolation goal for Olympiacos.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could have easily given Schalke the three-goal advantage in the match had he not missed the penalty. As a result, the German club endured nervous final minutes in the match after they conceded to a goal from Djamel Abdoun. The 85th minute goal for the Greek club was enough to give them some hope, but it was not enough to secure a draw. As a result of this victory, Schalke are now one of the favourites to qualify for the next stage.
