Women’s soccer has been on the up in recent years
Women’s soccer has been on the up in recent years and this has been confirmed by the tremendous interest shown in the women’s World Cup that has been taking place in the United States.
England women’s have been out to show the men’s team that England will have a lot of football capabilities even in this day and age. The nation that invented the game has been struggling to assert its superiority at international level. England’s men’s team were knocked out of the World Cup 2014 at the stages, but the women’s team have now progressed to the semi-final stage after beating Canada.
This has led to praise from none other than Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United and England captain is regarded as one of the finest players in the world and he says that the England Lioness have done the nation proud. He is just hoping that England reach the final and potentially win the tournament. They are still at long odds for such an event, but Rooney has congratulated the women’s team for reaching this stage of the competition. Faye White, who was an integral part of the world cups in 2011 and 2007, says that the road is still far ahead.
“England women doing the country proud. Huge congratulations on reaching the semi finals,” said Rooney on his Twitter account.“Every tournament that we played in it was always about trying to perform, trying to do our best to change people's perceptions but also to get the recognition which the performances have deserved. It has been a massive ride, the Olympics - everyone getting behind all sports on that occasion - but now in this World Cup, to get into a semi-final...it is a big achievement. We've gradually been rising to compete with the best teams in the world,” said White.
